Flavor Profile — Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Hills, Lake County

Grown in the striking red volcanic soils of Lake County’s Red Hills, this Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon expresses both power and precision.

The nose opens with concentrated blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry, reflecting the clone’s natural intensity and structure. Beneath the fruit lies a distinctive mineral signature—crushed volcanic rock, graphite, and a subtle iron-like note—echoing the region’s well-drained soils laced with obsidian, quartz, and volcanic gravel.

On the palate, the wine is bold yet finely etched. Firm tannins provide structure without heaviness, while bright natural acidity—encouraged by the elevation and porous soils—keeps the fruit focused and lifted. Layers of cocoa nib, espresso, and a hint of dried sage unfold alongside a subtle smoky undertone, reminiscent of sun-warmed stone.

The finish is long and resonant, marked by dark fruit purity, savory spice, and a refined mineral edge that speaks clearly of its volcanic origins.

High elevation volcanic hillsides produce intense mountain fruit with great color and structure. Located in the northern Mayacamas Mountains, the Red Hills are comprised of dozens of volcanic hills positioned directly over the North Coast Magna Pocket.

As a result, the Red Hills are a formation of the volcanic and tectonic processes producing well-drained vineyards rich in black obsidian, quartz crystals and volcanic gravel content, strikingly red in color.

The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard elevation is over 2,600 feet and the higher elevation and pure air allow for more than 10% extra UV light than neighboring sea level valleys. This UV triggers thicker grape skins, greater tannin, and intense wines with high phenolic content.

Here our clone Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon picks up warm sun all day then enjoys the cool nights to produce a deep flavored Cabernet Sauvignon that our club members love so much.
