Usage Suggestions

Fenugreek seeds are an important ingredient in Panch Phora, the Indian seed blend that is fried in oil at the commencement of making a curry.

Fenugreek seeds are best bought little and often - that way, instead of having them languish in your store cupboard for a long time, you can buy more, fresher seeds as and when you need them.

You'll get more flavor out of fenugreek seeds by grinding or dry frying them. To dry fry, heat up a pan, tip in the seeds and, over a medium heat, brown for a couple of minutes, tossing them around the pan frequently.

As the seed's so hard, they're difficult to grind by hand so, for recipes that call for ground, rather than whole, buy ready-ground, unless you have a small coffee grinder.

Health Benefits

Fenugreek seeds are a great source of soluble fiber, which can help control blood sugar levels. Many studies have shown that fenugreek can effectively lower blood sugar in diabetics. It also helps reduce fasting glucose and improve glucose tolerance. Although not that popular, fenugreek can easily be added to baked goods to help treat diabetes. You can also make fenugreek flour or brew it into tea. Fenugreek seeds are also considered one of the safest herbs for diabetes. The recommended dose of fenugreek seeds is 2–5 grams per day.

A part of the legume family, fenugreek is commonly used for digestive problems such as loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, and inflammatory disorders of the GI. Some studies have shown that fenugreek can slow the absorption of glucose and thus decrease spikes in blood sugar levels. Fenugreek is an excellent supply of minerals, including copper, potassium, calcium, iron, selenium, zinc, manganese, and magnesium.

Fenugreek can improve the sex life of men, according to a recent study.  The study was conducted by the researchers from Centre for Integrative Clinical and Molecular Medicine in Australia. The study involved 60 healthy Australian men aged between 25 and 52. They were given fenugreek extract two times a day for 6 weeks. Researchers found that men who took fenugreek extract have 25% higher libido levels compared to men who took a placebo.  It is believed that fenugreek seeds contain bioactive compounds called saponins which may stimulate the production of sex hormones.

Fenugreek increases the volume of breast milk in new mothers within 24 to 72 hours.  It is believed that it stimulates sweat production then it raises breast milk as breasts are modified sweat glands. Once the production of milk has reached enough level, new mothers can discontinue their intake of fenugreek.

Fenugreek also helps to decrease cholesterol levels & inflammation led by arthritis as well as helps the people suffering from both types of diabetes.  Ancient Egyptians used fenugreek to treat fever. It is also used to cure menopausal or digestive problems. As per latest studies it can increase appetite and control elevated blood sugar levels in diabetics.

Indian and traditional Chinese medicine recommend fenugreek to treat arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, improve digestion, maintain a healthy metabolism, increase libido and male potency, cure skin problems, such as wounds, rashes and boils, treat sore throat, and cure acid reflux.
