The 2013 year might be regarded as one of the all-time great red vintages for Napa Valley and Sonoma County.
For many winemakers California’s 2013 vintage was quite simply the finest of their experience. Originally Bill was making this wine as the next Sovereign but decided instead to divert this special reserve wine to his own personal cellar.
The succulent, full-bodied palate is well structured, long and fine layers of flavors - soft blackberry; hints of raspberry, red cherry and slightly earthy mint nuances.
Elevated levels of acidity and tannin cut through the fruit, preserving balance within this amazingly complex wine.
A consistently warm summer and early fall, free of any heat spikes or rain, made for an early harvest in ideal conditions.
From the 2013 harvest we produced wines of extraordinary depth and tannic concentration, built for aging but this structure was complemented by a remarkable wealth of fruit.
We felt the wine was so good that it deserved more time to mature. We selected several special barrels and transferred their wine into neutral red barrels for a further year of aging. This gave the special reserve wine a total of three years in oak to allow micro-oxygenation without any external wood-derived flavors.
The hallmark of this 2013 Special Reserve is this marriage of its ripe fruit with savory qualities making for striking complexity and sophistication in the glass.
The wine was made from grapes sustainably grown on our Ranch Estate located in the Dry Creek Valley appellation of Sonoma County.
