Ravish Melange 2022

Ravish Mélange is a right bank Bordeaux-Style blend inspired by the Pomerol wines of Château Pétrus and created from our California vineyards

Mélange is a French term for a mixture or blend like this—dominantly Merlot with just enough Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for structure and lift—it shows richness, polish, and quiet complexity.

NOTE: In recent years Château Petrus has ceased blending and the wine is now 100% Merlot. We have made Ravish Mélange according to the historic composition of Petrus while our single vineyard Merlot is our homage to the modern day Petrus.

Deep garnet in the glass, the wine opens with generous aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and cassis, layered with hints of cocoa, warm spice, and a touch of cedar. The small inclusion of Cabernet Franc lends a subtle floral lift—violet and a whisper of dried herbs—while the Cabernet Sauvignon contributes a faint graphite edge.

On the palate, the wine is supple and round, driven by Merlot’s plush texture and dark fruit core. Flavors of blackberry compote and blackcurrant are framed by notes of mocha and toasted oak. Fine-grained tannins provide structure without austerity, carrying through to a long, polished finish with lingering impressions of spice and soft earth.

Balanced and approachable, yet with enough backbone to evolve gracefully over the next several years.

Our 2022 season in Sonoma began with a certain unease, as if the vines sensed that the year might not proceed entirely according to plan. Winter was dry, spring offered a brief and welcome drink, and the vines set about their work with quiet determination. Summer, for the most part, behaved itself—warm, steady, even rather agreeable—allowing the grapes to ripen without undue drama.

And then, just as everything seemed comfortably on track, September arrived with all the subtlety of a slammed door. A fierce burst of heat hurried the grapes along, concentrating sugars, thickening skins, and sending growers into the vineyards with uncommon urgency. Harvest, which might have unfolded at a civilized pace, became something closer to a well-organized scramble.

The wines bear the imprint of this sudden shift: generous, full-bodied, and often deeply expressive, with a richness that hints at the sun’s insistence, yet—where handled with care—still carrying a measure of poise and balance beneath the surface.

French Oak for 22 months, approximately 40% new, 40% one use and the balance neutral.

Our vineyards are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable agriculture, using traditional techniques, strict reduction and control of yields, manual harvests, and numerous hands-on only tasks throughout the year.

No chemical fertilizers are applied. Instead, carefully selected cover crops are planted and returned to the soil, providing organic nutrients that allow our vines to reach remarkable age and consistently produce outstanding grapes.

In the winery, nothing is added to alter flavor or color. Every wine is allowed to express its natural character, reflecting both the care of the vineyard and the integrity of the wines.
