Intrigue Melange 2023

$145.00

Intrigue , a Left Bank Bordeaux style Red Wine created from our California vineyards with a blend inspired by Château Haut-Brion.

Intrigue means to arouse curiosity or interest by unusual, fascinating, or compelling means — much like the first “Claret” wines of Haut-Brion once intrigued the world, sparking a deep appreciation for fine Bordeaux and establishing the world’s first luxury wine brand.

Decant for one hour or more to reveal the wine’s full depth and serve at 65°F.

Intrigue, a California blend inspired by the wines of Château Haut-Brion.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby to garnet with brilliant clarity, evolving toward brick hues at the rim with age.

  • Nose: Distinctively earthy and smoky, often described as gravelly or mineral. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum mingle with tobacco, cedar, cigar box, and graphite. Layers of spice, leather, and truffle develop with maturity, along with subtle floral tones.

  • Palate: Full-bodied yet refined, marked by silky tannins and a supple texture. The wine balances richness with freshness, showing ripe dark fruit at its core alongside notes of smoke, earth, and warm spice. A hallmark is its smoky, savory complexity, giving it a unique identity among our Reserve Wines collection.

  • Finish: Long, elegant, and persistent, leaving impressions of fruit, mineral, and subtle savory depth.

  • Ageing Potential: 20+ years, renowned for longevity. In youth, it is powerful and structured; over decades, it gains harmony, softening into a wine of extraordinary finesse with layers of earth, truffle, and cigar-box character.

Compared with the other Reserve Wines in our collection, Intrigue is often described as the most earthy, smoky, and complexly savory, with an unmistakable terroir signature. Decant for at least one hour and serve at 65°F

Our 2023 wine vintage is being hailed as exceptional, potentially one of the best in recent memory, due to a combination of a long, cool growing season and ideal weather conditions allowing grapes to ripen slowly in balanced conditions. This resulted in plush, concentrated flavors, deep color, freshness, and strong tannic structure—ideal for long-lived wines.

Winemaking is marked by meticulous vineyard selection, manual harvesting, and parcel-by-parcel vinification in stainless steel and oak vats. Aging occurs in new French oak, which integrates seamlessly to enhance structure and complexity.

Following fermentation, the wine was transferred into new French oak barrels where malolactic fermentation took place.

All of our barrels are sourced from French cooperages with whom we’ve built trusted relationships for over twenty years. Crafted from oak grown in two select French forests, the wood is air-dried and seasoned over a five-year period. Each barrel is finished with our own tailored toast, designed to complement and enhance the delicate, nuanced character of our wines.

Only 309 cases produced. Our vineyards are farmed to the code of sustainable agriculture using traditional techniques, based on strict control of yields, manual harvests and numerous quality specific tasks that are carried out by hand throughout the year.

Little or no chemical fertilizers are used. Selection and planting of cover crops and their return to the soil provides additional organic nutrients allowing our vines to reach an advanced age and produce outstanding grapes.
