Heritage Shiraz 2013
A very elegant Shiraz from the Williamson Estate in Dry Creek Valley. The vineyard consists of Australian Shiraz and French Hermitage clones sustainably farmed to produce low yields of the finest quality fruit.
Case production = 412 cases x 750 ml + 90 cases x 375 ml
An utterly majestic Shiraz, sleek and seamless, with a structure embracing both expressiveness and grace. The intensity of wild plum fruit and cardamon spice holds attention until the nuances kick in, offering glints of exotic spice, coffee, cocoa, mineral, charcoal smoke pepper jerky with spruce wood notes.
Shows tremendous presence without a lot of weight, the smooth positive tannin shows but only in the best way.
We harvested at optimum ripeness and took the fruit through two days of pre-fermentation maceration followed by fermentation and then thirty days of post-ferment maceration to encourage the berries to surrender all their flavor. The wine is made from free run juice so the delicate flavors were preserved.
The 2013 vintage exceeded our expectations on both quality and quantity. Rare as it was to have another fruitful year right after the record breaking 2012 crush, the quality across all varietals was also excellent.
The overall vigor of this growing season was high which required more canopy management and more vigilance with regard to pest abatement. The harvest began and finished early, the timing of crop maturity being dictated entirely by our canopy management practices and manually reduced crop load.
By addressing canopy management and green fruit harvesting early we were able to significantly reduce pest pressure and encourage early fruit ripening. The final wine quality in tank was excellent across the board for all varietals and appellations.
