Gertie Gewurztraminer 2022

$39

A beautifully aromatic dry white wine with just the illusion of sweetness and medium to low acidity making it a perfect food wine.

Gewürztraminer or Gertie refers to the spicy Traminer grape.

It's history was recorded in the village of Tramin from the first century, then spreading to Alsace where Gewürz (spice) was added to its name and Gewürztraminer was used in Alsace from 1870. In 1973 the name Traminer was discontinued in Alsace where the grape is simply known as Gewurz or Gertie.

Soft off-white color with a tinge of gold with a gorgeous aromatic bouquet of white lavender and violets.

“Gertie” delivers a dry, yet juicy mouthful of lychee, super fresh fruit salad and honeysuckle-lime notes with just the illusion of sweetness. A dry wine with a lovely harmonious balance of acidity and tannin, then a clean bright subtle Grapefruit finish.

Chilled, this wine serves well by itself as an aperitif and will pair with zesty-flavored fare like BBQ chicken wings and will certainly go well with Thai, Indian, Turkish, Moroccan, Mediterranean and Lebanese dishes using either chicken and fish. It is also the all-time-classic pairing for Thanksgiving turkey and all its customary fixings.

Growing conditions in 2022 required careful vineyard irrigation and canopy management. The lack of adequate winter rain together with frost in late April contributed to a lower-than-normal projected yield. Minimal rainfall and high temperatures in early summer allowed for the fruit that successfully set in the spring to ripen quickly, and the dry conditions diminished any risk of rot.

Up to August moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights created excellent conditions for ripening and usually our California grape harvest starts in August extending through October.

The 2022 harvest was fast-tracked by a heat wave which came as a bit of a surprise however the white varieties and Pinot are showing excellent chemistries in the winery and getting grapes in a little early protects them from any further hot weather and the risk of wildfires.

The fruit was perfect, a testament to our sustainable farming methods in the vineyards and the courage to devote Russian River Valley terroir to Gewürztraminer in addition to the more expensive varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The grapes were barrel fermented in neutral barrels using native yeast and with no further malolactic fermentation this wine made itself in as natural a manner as possible.

Barrel fermented using native yeast in French oak for 12 months. The wine did not go through malolactic fermentation to retain a crispness in the mouth.
Gertie Gewurztraminer is from a single vineyard which produced only 240 cases.
