Scandal Zinfandel 2019

Scandal Zinfandel 2019

Bill making a Zin? Now that is a real scandal!

Our forth vintage of Scandal Zinfandel this is now a single-vineyard, single-varietal expression of Zinfandel with the vineyard showing its own unique characteristics.

Scandal - a Zinfandel made by a Bordeaux lover - what a Scandal !

Tasting Notes

The new wine has a nice medium-purple color and a bouquet that exhales yummy fruit. Even as a light-bodied wine this Scandal has all the opulence and richness of a mature Zinfandel with primary flavors of black pepper, plum, and a hint of barbecue caramelization. Dark and delicious this Scandal Zinfandel explodes with juicy fruitiness followed by spice and a soft tobacco-like smoky finish. A very drinkable red wine.

Production Notes

Cases produced = 900. No allergens were used in the making of this wine.

Winemaker Notes

The perfectly completed phenolic maturity of the grapes allowed manual picking when perfectly ripe, sorting, destemming, then cold pre-fermentation maceration.

After the cold soak time comes alcoholic fermentation in small, temperature-controlled, open-top tanks with punch downs occurring as needed during fermentation followed by 30 to 45 days of post-ferment maceration, all designed to extract the maximum flavor and color from the grape skins without violating the cells or seeds. The free-run wine is then consigned to French oak Bordelaise barrels for approximately 11 months adding suppleness and smoothness during the aging interval.

Following good winter rainfall and a cool spring, the 2019 summer growing season was near-perfect. Fortunately, the rain came when the flowers budded minimizing any shatter issues. The cool spring slowed down some of the fruit growth allowing the grapes time to develop and ripen, then the hotter August temperatures provided the right amount of stress at the right time for flavor development.

Cooperage Notes

Matured in French oak for 12 months - 33% new, 33% one use, balance neutral.
