Tango Malbec 2013
Malbec is a variety of purple grape used in making red wine. The grapes tend to have an inky dark color and robust tannin. One of the "noble five" grapes in red Bordeaux wine blends, the French plantings of Malbec are now found primarily in Cahors in the South West France region.
Williamson Tango Malbec ®
Tango is wonderfully deep, dense, glossy red-black hue when poured into the glass. The nose starts off with blackcurrant and ripe plum over a layer of densely compacted fruit beneath revealing a seam of minerals and still more. Pure on the palate with a juicy texture and a wealth of velvety tannin and acids but tied in with all this power there is floral fruit, great substance and a lovely presence. A wine in which flavor and power are entwined reminiscent of lovers entwined in the Tango, the dance of love.
Tango - The Name ®
Over the past two centuries Argentina has made Argentine Icons of two things, a Spanish dance called the Tango and a French grape called Malbec both of which have become synonymous with the culture of Argentina. The emerging relationship Argentina has with Malbec and the way this wine entwined itself into our taste buds, our hearts, our wine portfolio and our Icon collection all suggested to Bill that it should be called "Tango" a dance popular in Argentina in which the dancers are entwined as lovers.
Tango - The Wine
Malbec is used in small amounts in Bordeaux blends typically to add color and complexity. Originally planted in our estate vineyards to blend into our Bordeaux program the Malbec dominated our taste immediately demanding its own label. It was obvious that it belonged in our Icon collection. Bill loves steak au poivre and Malbec is perfect with that dish. A dark, almost black, spicy wine reminiscent of blackberries and chocolate, with a velvety texture. The wine is full bodied and able to mature elegantly but delicious early as well.
Tango sells out very quickly with each release so in 2008 we added a second vineyard to accommodate demand and in 2010 we added a third Malbec vineyard.
Tango - The Food
Tango is full-bodied red wine, powerful with a short finish. Ripe fruit flavors of plums and blackberry with tight tannins and the slightly earthy appeal makes for a strong, yet versatile wine to pair with foods having the following characteristics.

- Flavor – Multiple, complex flavors
- Spice - Very high spice content
- Loves – Smoke flavor
Tango is definitely a red meat wine. Pair it with roast beef, rib-eye steak and prime rib. It also goes well with roast turkey and chicken and will stand up to spicy Mexican, Cajun, Indian and Italian foods, especially those with rich tomato based sauces. Malbec is a thin-skinned grape and needs more sun and heat to mature than either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Ripening mid-season it has a very deep color, ample tannin, and a particular plum-like flavor component adding color and fruit complexity to Bordeaux blends.
Called Auxerrois or Côt Noir in Cahors, called Malbec in Bordeaux, and Pressac in other places, the grape originated in northern Burgundy and was widely planted in Bordeaux but became less popular there after frost killed most of the 1956 crop.
Although plantings in the Medoc have decreased Malbec is now the dominant red varietal in the Cahors area. The Appellation Controlée regulations for Cahors require a minimum content of 70% Malbec.
Malbec has become a "national variety" of Argentina, introduced in the mid 19th century by French agronomist Miguel Pouget, it is the largest planted variety in the country focused most heavily in the Mendoza region.
