Dawn, Bill and Sam hit the high seas once again in 2018 with a crew of great wine club members! After an extremely successful 2017 cruise to Greece, Italy, France & Spain , the culture, romance and allure of the Adriatic called.

This time around included 10-days once again aboard Oceania Cruises' elegant "Rivieria" beginning on August 13, 2018 in the canals of Venice, moving to exploration of the Adriatic Coast with a full day in Koper, Slovenia and Kotor, Montenegro plus stops in Greece, Sicily and ending at the ancient ruins of Rome on August 23, 2018.

Our Williamson Wines guests enjoyed exclusive group receptions, wine tasting seminars and the always popular Epicurean dinner and all served with hand selected Williamson wines. We also enjoyed shore tours to discover the wines of the regions we visited.

Europe Odyssey 2018 ~ Adriatic Coast

Explore vibrant Split with its impressive Roman ruins and the medieval walled city of Dubrovnik, the dramatic bay of Kotor and surprisingly charming Koper. Also on the itinerary are Rijeka, Croatia; Cephalonia, Greece; Catania and Amalfi, Italy. All-in-all, five countries and nine ports of call before arriving in the final destination of Rome.

The magic and wonderment of Venice cannot be explained. A city built upon canals, where cars are not allowed, seems like something out of a history book. A gondola ride through the canals under the beautiful bridges that span the waterways is the perfect way to get in the city’s romantic mood. Venice is more than just its waterways though. It has wonderful artwork, stunning architecture and a long history of producing fine products like glass and lace.

When cruising to Koper, Slovenia expect to see a little bit of everything. A short distance from the pier is the town square that holds shops, cafes, restaurants and cathedrals. Old Town is something that you do not want to miss on your cruise to Koper, Slovenia. This small area is a Venetian-era neighborhood with one small main street that takes you straight to a gorgeous cathedral with a bell tower. Specialty wines and local crafts can be found along the Old Town area in quaint shops and markets. This city has a great mixture of Slovenian and Italian cultures, the landscaping here is simply beautiful with the Adriatic Sea, mountains, red roofed houses and historic buildings.

Because of its prime location, Rijeka was fought over for centuries (and changed hands) by nearby countries, including Hungary and Italy. The city has been around since at least Neolithic times, although the earliest modern settlements were Celtic in origin. A strong Roman influence helped shape the city, with the Ostrogoths, Byzantines, and other playing a role in development. In 1920, Rijeka was declared an independent state, then finally part of an independent Croatia in 1991.

When cruising to Split, Croatia expect to find Venetian, Roman, French, Italian, Austrian and Yugoslav influences as they all have at one point in time controlled the area. The food here is one of a kind where each of the influences makes the cuisine unique. There are an abundance of wineries and restaurants that will serve you a little something different that is worth trying on your cruise to Split, Croatia. This beautiful city along the Dalmatian coast offers spectacular beaches to relax and take in the scenic views. There are many exciting historical and architectural sites to see along the center of the village as well as museums and galleries. The museums and galleries have an assortment of artwork that tells the story of the area’s past.

It’s only been in the last decade or so that tourists have been flocking to Croatia to enjoy the history and beautiful landscapes of Italy’s neighbor. In fact, back in the Middle Ages, Dubrovnik was nearly as important as Venice. The famous playwright George Bernard Shaw was quoted as saying that Dubrovnik was a paradise on Earth. Perhaps the most significant site of this city is the old walled town that offers locals and visitors a respite from the modern day and a look back at the past. Dubrovnik is 'Kings Landing' in the HBO TV hit "Game of Thrones".

Visiting Kotor, Montenegro expect to be swept away by the beautiful landscaping that surrounds you. This coastal town is located along the Gulf of Kotor at the base of mountain Lovcen where old narrow streets, antique shops and restaurants as well as many churches, monuments and ancient buildings can be found. The Old City of Kotor is one of the most well preserved medieval towns surrounded by a large city wall that was built during the 9th century with Venetian influence. This coastal town is also a UNESCO World Natural and Historical Heritage Site, for its beautiful bay area and scenic background.

Argostoli is a former municipality and town that is located on the island of Kephalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. It has a small population of 14,000 and is surrounded by forests and mountains. Kephalonia is a beautiful island while Argostoli is its primary township and it lies in an inlet situated at the southern coast. It is also well protected from rough seas and the surrounding cafes and Central Square around the region are delightful. >

Catania is filled with stories, history and culture. The Duomo Square, Cavour Square, Roman Theater and Ursino Castle are among the top spots to visit. Located along the eastern coast of Sicily, the area can be described as elegant and modern with a great twist of history. Catania is also rich with baroque architecture, medieval castles, Roman era theaters, and a flourishing cultural and artistic center.

Amalfi, Italy is very charming with its turquoise skies and waters, rich history and fresh seafood. Quaint white houses can be found along the steep slopes showing its Spanish influences around the beautiful bay filled with fishing boats. Explore the Capuchin monastery, built in the 1100’s and see the beautiful 11th-century Cathedral. Indulge in some delicious Italian pastries and espresso in a café that overlooks the bay. Try some of the locally grown artisan food and the wine made from grapes grown in the backyards.

After disembarking from a cruise to Civitavecchia, you’ll want to catch a train to the Eternal City. Rome has been one of the most important cities in the world for centuries. It is here where the capital of the Holy Roman Empire was situated, and it is here where Julius Caesar ruled. While the city thrives with ancient ruins and mythical stories of the past, it is also a bustling metropolis. Still the capital of Italy, Rome is filled with an active population, many of them zipping around on mopeds. However, when it comes time for a meal, the Romans slow down to enjoy wine and classic Italian dishes.

Fares include double occupancy and embarkation takes place on August 13, 2018. In order to qualify you should be an adult able to enjoy a wide range of foods and wines. U.S. Citizens must have a valid U.S. (Blue) Passport to travel and your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date.

Entry Visas
The Schengen Area is comprised of 26 countries that have agreed to allow free movement of their citizens within this area as a single country. Greece, Italy and Slovenia are Schengen States and do not require American (or Australian) citizens travelling as tourists to obtain a visa prior to arrival.

While Croatia joined the European Union in 2013, it is not a member of the Schengen area however U.S. and Australian citizens do not require a visa for tourist trips of less that 90 days.

The weather in September is similar to California with daily highs of up to 80°F and lows down to 60°F.

The ship maintains a country club casual environment so will easily accept typical U.S. country club clothing styles. Daytime dress code is smart casual with comfortable walking shoes. Jeans and shorts are quite acceptable.

Our evening restaurant dress code is again smart casual. Please no jeans, caps, coats or ties for the guys. Ladies, comfortable late summer chic with just a little jewelry.
