Elate Grange Cuvée

Bill put his convictions and imagination into making Elate in the style of an Australian Grange. From the first experimental vintage in 2008 Elate Grange Cuvée has been a fine homage to one of the world's most iconic wines.

Produced for decades in Australia, this blend, now being labeled a “Super Rhône”, is a new concept in California as we see the two wines blending together to transform into a softer, more exotic, style of wine.

By blending our gold medal winning Shiraz with our gold-medal winning Cabernet Sauvignon, we have created a beautifully seductive, modern wine that combines some of the best qualities of the great wines of Bordeaux, the Rhône and Australia.

Elate means to be in high spirits; exultant or proud. - this wine will deliver that feeling.

Pairing Food with Elate Grange Cuvée ®

Elate shows cranberry and dark cherry on the nose with a soft toffee-licorice flavor in the center pallet and a soft clove finish. It will work best paired with foods having the following characteristics.

  • Texture – Heavy
  • Flavor - Multiple, complex flavors
  • Spice – Medium to high spice content
  • Loves – Umami

Elate is very food-friendly so it can be enjoyed with a broad range of light dishes including fish, veal, and poultry. Even rich southern French cooking is a great pairing such as Spit Roasted Chicken.

Rich spices like ginger and tarragon flavors are a natural match, as is a slight smokiness. Vegetables, lightly spiced with onion, pepper and nutmeg will work well. NOTE: Umami is a taste sensation that is meaty or savory such as found in soy or teriyaki sauces. More . . .

Bill's Notes on Elate Grange Cuvée ®

2008 was our first vintage of Elate with fruit from the Vesenaz vineyard. Located high on the Dry Creek Valley bench land this vineyard is planted on exceedingly well drained soils with a high component of shale and serpentine rock. Irrigation immediately drains out in the same way as the hillside vineyards of the Rhône Valley, and here we farm the classic Rhône grape varieties Syrah/Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre.

We are taking our home-country Australian model to a higher level with ultra-premium mountain fruit and careful vinification then blending a lush blackberry Cabernet component with the energy of blueberry fruit and slightly peppery character of Shiraz resulting in a fusion of wonderful flavors.

Our Shiraz, made from ripe grapes is more fruit-driven, sightly higher in alcohol and less obviously tannic. It has a nice pepper note and is easily approached when young. With the added lively, rich flavors of plums, blackberry vanilla and tobacco found in our Seduce Cabernet Sauvignon, Elate becomes an exciting wine.

The blend softens the concentration of the Cabernet, opening it up to the opulent Shiraz fruit resulting in a more voluptuous mouth feel with the promise of added complexity with age.
